Grand Rapids Business Journal is recognizing the 50 Most Influential Women in West Michigan.
GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - They represent some of the most powerful business women in the state and this week they're being honored for their success. Grand Rapids Business Journal is recognizing the 50 Most Influential Women in West Michigan.
The women represent movers and shakers in the public and private sectors. They are women who have shattered the proverbial glass ceiling.
"We use judges from across the state. This year they reviewed 110 nominations. They look at business acumen, the success of the person's career or career track and look at community work such as what boards and non-profits they might be serving," said Carole Valade, editor of Gemini Publications, which includes the Grand Rapids Business Journal.
Valade says it is a special honor to make the list and "stay" on the list for several years. That is exactly what WZZM 13 president and general manager Janet Mason has done. One of the things that sets Mason apart, as well as many of the other nominees, is a commitment to mentoring younger women.
"When you go through a career cycle in the early part of your career you are trying to learn all you can. in the middle part of your career you are probably trying to earn all you can and the third phase of your career it is time for giving back.. I'm in that third phase now and that is exactly what I am trying to do," said Mason.
Valade says, "It is more and more proven through national research -- where there are mentors there are more women who are able to achieve a level that they may not have on their own."
Women are still under-represented when it comes to board and executive positions in Michigan's top 100 companies. The Grand Rapids Business Journal hopes this event will help create recognition and networking opportunities for West Michigan business women.
Tickets are still available for the luncheon, which is tomorrow between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at The Amway Grand Plaza Hotel.
