HUDSONVILLE, Mich. (WZZM) -- After 74 years in business, Hudsonville-based Lamar Construction Co. is shutting down its construction operations, idling 180 workers.

The business, 4404 Central Parkway, announced the closings today.

Facilities in Michigan, Colorado and Kentucky are affected. Lamar will continue operating its structural steel division and none of those workers will be impacted, the company said in a statement.

Lamar Construction shut down its website Wednesday morning.

Employees filing out of the Hudsonville offices said they were told today would be their last day.

Tara Brouwer of Holland worked three years as a project coordinator. She saysLamar is the best place she's ever worked.

"I think that 95 percent of the people that work here have no hard feelings,'' Brouwer said. "Stuff like this happens, unfortunately, but everyone will get past it.''

Lamar "is the best place I've ever worked,'' Brouwer added.

Lamar's list of projects includes health care facilities, large retail "box stores,'' schools, stadiums and pedestrian bridges.

In a statement released at its headquarters, the company said "this is a sad and difficult day." It blames "current economic conditions" within their construction operations for the closing.

A few construction employees will stay on as other projects that are in progress wind down, the statement said.

On its Facebook page, Lamar Construction is described as "a Michigan-based national firm providing a broad range of commercial construction services." Lamar is headquartered in Hudsonville with operations in Colorado, Kentucky, and other locations. All locations are affected.
