GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Violent crime in the first half of 2014 are at about the same level as the first six months of last year.

There have only been two murders in Grand Rapids so far in 2014, a decrease of nearly 70 percent, while rapes have decreased by almost 50 percent.

Motor vehicle thefts were up 14 percent, but most of those were mopeds and in most cases, the person was arrested.

New police chief David Rahinsky credited the people of his department for achieving numbers he says are consistent with his goal of making Grand Rapids the safest city of its size in America.
