Kent City, Mich. (WZZM) -- More than 60,000 West Michigan residents were in the dark as of 11 pm., with 16,000 living in Kent County. Kent County Emergency Management Coordinator Jack Stewart says Northern Kent County was the worst hit part of the county.
80-mile-per-hour winds ripped part of the roof right off Kent City High School's gym.
Stewart say rain was pouring into the school gym and multi-purpose room for a few hours afterwards.
"If you're standing in the gym, you can see right to the outside, and the multi-purpose room, part of the roof was completely blown off," he said. "Most of the school was not affected, but those areas that were, the damage was substantial."
Stewart says he doesn't know what the status of school will be on Monday. He says his emergency crews are mostly finding structure damage in Northern Kent County, but they're seeing down power lines and trees everywhere.
